Job description

This is a great opportunity for a keen entry level software engineer to learn the latest skills and technologies in the fast-paced world of web development from a small and friendly technical team. 

You will be working with an experienced team designing and building complex websites, control panels, server scripts, and job alerts on cloud servers. You will get to be involved with everything and there will be lots to learn, but you will quickly be working with code and making a difference. 

We will teach you how to apply advanced software skills and how to build websites powered by the latest frameworks and tools on our cloud servers. Our websites are based on the leading PHP framework Laravel or custom build PHP frameworks with Symfony and Laravel components. As well as coding you will be doing the tasks of any developer including analysis, problem solving, research, testing, deployment and support. We apply agile rapid-development methodologies and are continually updating our code to stay close to the leading edge while supported by automated tests, which enables us to release updates most days.

We strongly believe in work-life balance and are a flexible and supportive team. Our software development team is centred in an office located in Kingston, London but often works remotely.

Job requirements

You should meet the following requirements:

  • You are familiar with building websites using PHP and can discuss examples you worked on.
  • You enjoy software engineering and can demonstrate coding experience.
  • You can work well independently and in a team.
  • You are able to commute to our Kingston office (postcode KT1 3GZ) as required (likely to be 1-2 days per week longer term or more if you prefer).
  • Good communication skills and excellent written and spoken English.
  • You do not need a visa to work in the UK.

Desirable but not essential skills

Any of these skills will give you an advantage:

  • Computing degree or computer science A level.
  • HTML
  • PHP Frameworks (Laravel or Symfony)
  • Linux
  • Git
  • Database skills including SQL, MySQL and MariaDB
  • Web skills such as Bootstrap, CSS, Javascript (JQuery, React or Vue.js).
  • Object Oriented Design and design patterns
  • REST interfaces and microservices.

What do we offer you?

  • A relaxed, friendly and low stress environment with regular hours.
  • We’ll train you using a mixture of in person and online training, so you’ll be coding quickly and within a few months you’ll be confident in our key technologies.
  • You’ll be designing and coding using best practice patterns and code standards including Object Oriented Design.
  • You’ll work with the industry standard tools in the latest versions as that’s what we like to work with.
  • 8 hours work per day, but with some flexibility in working times as we are task-oriented. No weekend working.
  • You’ll get occasional travel to our other European offices for short periods (likely to be once or twice per year for a few days).
  • A new laptop, with monitor, riser and keyboard package.
  • A balance of remote and office working.
  • 24 days paid holiday plus bank holidays.
  • Pension.
  • Salary of £25-£29,000 plus annual performance-related bonus of up to 5% of salary.

  • Our office is a short walk to the lively town of Kingston with a large choice of cafes, pubs and shops. Kingston and Surbiton stations are a short bus ride or 20 minute walk away.
