About the team/job

We are seeking a highly motivated technical person to take on a role as a Cloud Engineer at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI). Located within a beautiful research campus near Cambridge, EMBL-EBI offers a unique opportunity to acquire professional experience in an international scientific environment with access to cutting edge technologies.

Your role

This exciting role develops and supports our cloud infrastructure which includes Openstack, Kubernetes and VMware. We are passionate about cloud technology and making it work effectively for complex workloads. We are looking for an applicant who shares this vision and is prepared to actively collaborate with team members to innovate and support cutting edge cloud computing environments at EMBL-EBI.

The role is diverse, from system administration to creating infrastructure as code, good communication skills being a key part of the process. We consider personal development and continuous learning an important aspect of the role, and with this ethos the team keeps abreast of the latest technology.

You have

  • A degree in Computer Science or equivalent work experience;
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem solving skills;
  • Experience of Linux administration;
  • Should be comfortable working collaboratively in an agile environment, with an automation oriented mindset;
  • Excellent English and communication skills and be able to work well within a team;
  • Being user focused is very important as the role will often include interacting with internal and external users by answering queries and developing documentation.

You might also have

In addition we will be looking for those individuals with any experience of:

  • OpenStack or other cloud layer implementation and administration;
  • VMware vSphere administration and design;
  • Kubernetes architecture and administration.

(note these are not mandatory and you will be able to learn and develop your skills in these with us.)
