About the team/job

The IT Team at EMBL-EBI is undergoing a technology transformation so there has never been a more exciting time to join us. This role will in part be responsible for ensuring the current IT infrastructure operates effectively, but more importantly will be a key driver in our journey in adopting public cloud and to help drive delivering ITSM.

Your role

In this role you will work on a variety of enterprise technologies with opportunities to enhance existing technical skills and develop new ones. You should be able to diagnose and resolve problems quickly, and have the patience to communicate with a variety of interdisciplinary teams and users.

As part of a multi team project, we are working towards adopting a public cloud to build a hybrid model to modernise and bring efficiencies across our services to solve challenges such as deploying and managing big DBs. This role requires interaction with users of all technical abilities so good customer facing skills are essential. Your goal will be to ensure that our infrastructure runs smoothly and efficiently.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provision, management & security of the Operating System layer across 2600 hosts, across multi cloud providers (internal/external) VMware/Openstack/public cloud;
  • Implementing enhancement to existing tools/services;
  • Monitoring and tuning server performance;
  • Root cause analysis researching implementing fixes to avoid recurrence of the problem;
  • Evaluating and implementing new technologies/processes that are best fit for the organization;
  • Development & maintenance of standard practices;
  • Create, review and maintain documentation and knowledge sharing;
  • Continuous improvement of our IT infrastructure and support process based on the needs of EMBL-EBI users and stakeholders;
  • Provide BAU support for deployed solutions, ensuring correct prioritisation tickets from the Helpdesk desk in an appropriate manner and to SLA.

You have

Preferably you will have been exposed to using technologies such as:

  • Public Cloud (AWS/GCP);
  • VMware, OpenStack;
  • Puppet;
  • Shibboleth;
  • CheckMK;
  • Understand protocols SMTP, IMAP & LDAP;
  • Systems administration work to support a database team running a mix of NoSQL and relational DBMS such as MongoDB, Oracle, MySQL or Postgres would be beneficial.

Experience required:

  • Enterprise Server administration (CentOS/RHEL) with 3 years +;
  • Troubleshooting skills with protocols such as LDAP, DNS, TCP/IP, SMTP & SNMP;
  • Email management (SMTP/IMAP);
  • OpenLDAP administration;
  • Configuration Management (Puppet/Foreman);
  • Experience in writing scripts (Python/Bash);
  • Virtualisation (Public Cloud/VMware/Openstack;
  • Containerization technology (Docker/K8s);
  • Exposure deploying into Public Cloud (GCP/AWS);
  • OS security/patch management.
