Scope

Starting from product requirements or product specification inputs from the Market & Solutions departments, the R&D teams elaborate the architecture of the solution and build the technical design of the product. The teams ensure the robustness, reliability, testability, quality, and upgradeability of all building blocks. The Head of Engineering leads and sustains operational excellence at all levels (individual, team, and company) as well as the activities that govern how work is performed. He/She takes an active role in the implementation of the way of working and ensures that the teams fulfill their commitments. He/She leads and supports the different steps of the development lifecycle of a product line: evaluation of the technical requirements, elaboration of the architecture, estimation, planning, tracking, and reporting of the developments, developer’s tests, automated deployment, and technical documentation. He also empowers innovation and supports decisions in line with the company blueprint. He/She also ensures the coordination with the Solution Management, Product Owners, Scrum Masters, and Quality Control teams in the same product line as well as with other departments and external key stakeholders. He/She is ultimately accountable for the adoption, success, and ongoing improvement within the scope under his responsibility.

Job Description

  • Organizes and reorganizes around business value and customer satisfaction;

  • Leads and sustains organizational change by empowering individuals and teams to reach their highest potential;
  • Ensures modern practices that push the quality to higher standards;
  • Leads servants towards people management and HR related activities;
  • Provides guidance and coaching to individuals, teams, and managers. Ensures the development of the people’s competencies and performance;
  • Supports the related Solution Managers, Product Owners, Scrum Masters, and R&D Managers in their role;
  • Stimulates teams towards technical design proposals and architecture in line with the company strategy;
  • Empowers the development team to autonomously execute development projects within deadlines and budget, in close collaboration with the different project owners, scrum masters, and R&D managers;
  • Intervenes appropriately during projects to ensure the development lifecycle is realized in accordance with the company’s short/long term priorities;
  • Manages and plans equipment, staffing, and training needs within the team and provides the necessary input to management for budgeting purposes. Builds and follows budget;
  • Is an active contributor as R&D SteerCo to continuously improve the department. Steers specific improvement initiatives;
  • Takes some leading role in the Scaling framework in R&D. Ensures communication flows in the department;
  • Supports company goals and defines departmental strategy. Reports to Leadership Team when required;
  • Collaborates proactively with any department and traversal teams (Architects, Innovation teams);
  • Communicates, and exchanges best practices and experiences between the different development teams;
  • Coordinates PLM with other departments’ interaction (Market & Solutions, Operations, Support, Sales, Marketing, Finance…).

Profile

  • Master's degree or equivalent through experience with hardware or software development background;
  • Minimum of 5 years of management experience in a technology development organization;
  • Technical hardware skills (FPGA, front-end, back-end, PCB technologies, mechanical designs).

Soft skills:

  • Structured, organized, rigorous, good communicator, decision-maker;
  • Achieve high-quality results through thoughtful analysis and planning; target driven and result oriented;
  • Team Management capacity and credible experience;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, shares information actively; responds properly, reports on time; accepts feedback and other opinions, addresses criticism constructively;
  • Capable of planning and tracking the work of a team, communicating planning and progress, of getting help where needed;
  • High-stress resistance; does not give up in crisis; does not lose control under pressure.

The following experiences are not mandatory, and will be considered as an asset:

  • Broadcast background;
  • Experience in Agile Development and Scrum methodology;
  • Experience in distributed and highly available architecture and deployments.

Languages:

  • Fluent in English;
  • Knowledge in other languages is an asset.
