The Director, R&D Software Engineering (F/M/D) is responsible for all aspects of the development function, including product architecture, software development, software testing and release management. Mentor and lead multiple development teams focused on sustaining existing products and delivering new product initiatives. Requires strong leadership abilities, a broad technical background, a disciplined approach to managing the software lifecycle and the ability to communicate effectively across the organization.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • In collaboration with upper management and relevant stakeholders, define the technical and management strategy and the budget necessary to sustain existing software products and to develop new product initiatives;
  • In collaboration with product management, determine product requirements within an agile development framework and establish development milestones. Achieve and document those milestones on time and within budget. Monitor and report variations to plan;
  • Foster collaboration between Software Development and Software Quality Engineering to build software that maximizes test automation and distributes integration responsibilities throughout the development cycle;
  • Responsible for the capacity of the software development teams and for variation in capacity and rate of productivity and quality, such as unplanned work, work remaining, quality indicators, and actual quality versus planned velocity;
  • Collaborate with Quality Assurance, Service Delivery and Product Management teams for effective communication and documentations that are intended for customers, corporate management, and validation;
  • Participate as a member of the Engineering senior management team and the corporate Management team to help define corporate strategy and goals;
  • Proactively identify potential risks and work with stakeholders to develop mitigation strategies. Ensure that development metrics in various corporate systems are maintained and monitored;
  • Work with the Human Resources department to attract and retain top-notch talent; maintain an effective, measurable performance management process. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, training and developing employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Also responsible for organization development, change management, leadership development, diversity, and the enhancement of the performance of the unit;
  • Ability to think differently and embrace change when needed;
  • Mindset of continuous improvement and track record of building high performing teams.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Attend technical conferences, seminars and workshops to keep abreast of the latest and modern trends in building software applications that directly relate to the business;
  • Participate in hiring events and be the technology evangelist for the products and solutions at Clario;
  • Care deeply about building reliable, robust and performant applications;
  • Passionate about software development by contributing to open source, speaking at development conferences, blogging, and/or side projects.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS NEEDED:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, a related technical field or equivalent practical experience.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 10 years of technical experience;
  • Proven leadership experience managing development staff of 10+ at various levels, disciplines and technologies;
  • Strong knowledge of project management methods and practices, particularly agile development methodologies;
  • Strong management, prioritization, analytical, problem-solving and communication skills;
  • An excellent understanding of software architecture (e.g., multi-tier architecture, multi-tenant SaaS deployments, performance, reliability, and capacity);
  • Solid understanding of data modeling, process modeling and database design concepts;
  • Experience in business case development (including cost benefit analysis) and budgeting;
  • Experience in staff career development, performance evaluation and team building;
  • A track record of managing scope and delivering projects on time and within budget.
