Purpose of the role
The Senior Engineering Manager is the owner of Wizz Air’s EDGE and Perimeter Engineering domain, with primary accountability for DNS, CDN, Bot Protection, and related perimeter services on AWS. The role is critical to ensuring secure, resilient, highperformance global access to Wizz Air’s digital platforms.
This position leads a dedicated EDGE engineering team and is responsible for defining and evolving the technology stack, planning and executing engineering roadmaps, and driving the implementation of changes across DNS, CDN, and securityfocused perimeter services. The role requires close collaboration with cloud providers, security and network vendors, and internal IT, Security, Architecture, and Digital Product teams to ensure alignment with business growth, availability, performance, and security objectives.
This position reports to the Head of Engineering and Architecture within the Digital organization.
Responsibilities
Strategic
- Ensure technology decisions continue to support a rapid growth trajectory;
- Establish governance and frameworks for measuring current status and roadmap progress;
- Establish and implement engineering principles and standards across the various teams.
Project
- Coordinate work for the current flagship digital project of Wizz Air where the main goal is to migrate the current website to a cloud native architecture and meanwhile transform the organization;
- Manage current engineering effort for the website and the apps;
- Coordinate regular training sessions for business users;
- Perform assessments and benchmarking across the the engineering teams.
General
- Managing the internal engineering managers;
- Direct management of 50+ external resources;
- Manage budget, time, and developer resources;
- Manage multiple vendors and participate in IT tenders;
- Responsible for the yearly and quarterly budgeting process;
- Form and manage engineering strategy;
- Actively seeks opportunities, embracing the ideation process to leverage the possibilities.
Experience
- 5-7+ years overall IT/engineering experience, with 5+ years in cloud or network‑centric engineering roles;
- 4+ years in engineering leadership or people management roles;
- Proven experience leading DNS, CDN, WAF, Bot Protection, or EDGE platforms at scale;
- Experience working with global, highly available, internet‑facing systems.
Hard skills
- Strong hands‑on and architectural knowledge of DNS technologies (authoritative DNS, traffic steering, health checks);
- Deep understanding of CDN concepts: caching strategies, origin protection, performance optimization, TLS, and global traffic routing;
- Experience with Bot Protection, WAF, and DDoS mitigation concepts and tooling;
- Strong expertise in AWS EDGE and networking services, including Route 53, CloudFront, AWS Shield, AWS WAF, and related services;
- Understanding of networking fundamentals: TCP/IP, HTTP/S, TLS, Anycast, latency‑based routing;
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code (e.g. Terraform, CloudFormation) and automation;
- Familiarity with monitoring, observability, and incident response in distributed systems.
Education
- Bachelor's or Master's degree.
Language
- Fluent in English (both written and spoken).
