Senior Hardware Design Engineer

u-blox

Thalwil or Espoo

This role is part of the Hardware Products team under the Standard Precision and Low Power Products (SPL) Business Unit, which is responsible for the definition, planning, implementation, and testing of u-blox low-power positioning products. The team consists of passionate engineers working closely together in a friendly, cooperative, and international environment. You are expected to actively collaborate and share your knowledge within the team to increase alignment across all other HW designers. Furthermore, you will work cross-functionally with other teams within the BU and in the wider organization, such as software development and IC design teams to bring complex electronic systems from concept to mass production. You will need to occasionally travel between sites as required by your work tasks.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Architecture & Design: Lead system-level hardware architecture, schematic capture, and multi-layer PCB layout.
  • Prototyping & Bring-Up: Assemble, test, and debug initial hardware prototypes in the lab.
  • Testing & Validation: Develop and execute comprehensive Design Verification Testing (DVT) and hardware validation plans.
  • Compliance: Ensure designs meet industry standards for EMI/EMC, safety, and environmental regulations.
  • Manufacturing: Collaborate with manufacturing partners to transition designs into high-volume production (DFM and DFT).
  • Mentorship: Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior and mid-level hardware engineers.

Your Skills and Experience:

  • Education: B.S. or M.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • Excellent communication skills in English - capable of handling technical discussions and presentations, planning and decision making, and technical documentation. Experience of working in a team setting, ideally in a Scrum environment.
  • Experience: 6+ years of hands-on experience in electronic hardware design.
  • Core Tools: Proficiency with industry-standard EDA tools (e.g., Altium Designer, Cadence Allegro, OrCAD, or KiCad).
  • Technical Expertise: Strong background in RF or wireless communications design (noise figure, sensitivity, transmission lines, impedance matching, Smith chart etc.), analog circuit design, power management, and mixed-signal systems.
  • Lab Skills: Masterful use of oscilloscopes, spectrum and network analyzers, multimeters, and logic analyzers.
  • Experience with the design of highly integrated SiP modules, GNSS receivers or their integration in end-products is a plus.
  • Familiarity with SolidWorks, and coding/scripting with Python is a plus.
  • Experience with leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools and methods in HW development is a plus.
