For our customer, the European Space Agency (ESA), we are seeking an experienced space Operations Engineer to work at ESA’s ESTEC site in Noordwijk, The Netherlands.

Job description

You will be a member of Terma’s Engineering Services team integrated into the customer responsible for operations engineering in support of Human Spaceflight and Robotic Exploration Directorate (D/HRE) projects. You will support on-going preparations for the operations of ESA’s contributions to international manned space projects – ISS, Artemis (Orion), Lunar Gateway.


The tasks to be performed are:

  • Lead of the Integration, Verification and Validation activities:
    • Prepare the Gateway Operations Validation and Verification Plan;
    • Prepare the documents related to the tests in the Gateway Operations Validation and Verification Plan (Interface Ground System Tests Procedures, System Validation Tests procedures);
    • Be future Tests Conductor;
    • Participation in working group meetings with NASA (Mission Services WG, HLCS I&T WG, C&T Integration ESTRACK splinter WG, GPCB, HOSC/HECC ICD Splinter, Gateway Modeling & Simulation Working Group).
  • Erasmus Support Facility (ESF) Facility Manager:
    • Plan the evolution of the ESF to Orion (European Service Module)/Gateway support from the current ISS situation;
    • Update the current layout of the facility to perform ESM operations.

This is a full-time position located at ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands.

The requested start of work is September 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.

How to succeed in this position?

The successful candidate shall have:

  • A Masters’ level degree in Aerospace Engineering, Space Systems Engineer, or related technical discipline;
  • At least 4 years of relevant professional experience acquired in the space industry;
  • A background in operations engineering of space projects;
  • Experience with ground segments and system level integration, verification, and validation activities of space projects;
  • Familiarity with space-ground communication protocols;
  • Knowledge of networking technology (ports, protocols, and security) and maintenance of IT infrastructure required for space mission ground support centres.


  • Prior experience with human spaceflight projects e.g. ISS, Lunar Gateway would be a distinct advantage.

Soft skills:

  • Ability to collaborate well with other ESA entities and international partner technical teams (e.g. NASA, JAXA, DLR).
  • Possess excellent English language skills, both written and spoken.
